Winter is Coming : Snow Storms Have Disrupted Travel in Parts of UK

For those of you who are currently or want to travel to the UK, please be careful. Because some areas in the UK experience very extreme weather, namely snowstorms.

Heavy snowfall hit several areas of United Kingdom on Monday (12/12/2022) and disrupted activities at airports, trains, and highways in London. The rain was the coldest night in England all year.

London's underground transport and communications systems have also been suspended. Roads were clogged with snow and London's Gatwick and Stansted airports warned of disrupted flight schedules.

More than 50 flights were canceled on Sunday at Heathrow, Britain's largest airport, due to snow fog.

1. The temperature reaches minus 15 degrees Celsius in Northern Scotland

The Meteorological Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice in London and south-east England, as well as warnings in other parts of England and the rest of Northern Ireland.

Temperatures dipped below minus 15 degrees Celsius in northern Scotland. The Meteorological Office also warned of weather disturbances expected for Tuesday night.

2. Three boys died from a frost

Three boys reportedly died when they fell into an ice-covered lake in Solihull on Sunday afternoon. There is also one child who is in critical condition. It is suspected that the boy suffered a heart attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital.

"Search of the lake continues as we work to determine exactly what happened and whether anyone else fell into the water," West Midlands Police said.

One witness reported seeing other children in the frozen lake during the cold weather, but police did not report anyone else missing in the incident.

Emergency services rushed to the scene with the fire department and police. They waded into frozen water to get out the children who were still trapped, said Solihull Superintendent Richard Harris.

3. Power supply is still safe

Meanwhile, Britain's National Grid canceled a request to prepare two units of coal-fired power plants, which were on standby in the country for operation on Monday.

Two units owned by the Drax Group have been made available to cover the short supply of electricity, as wind power plants experience power cuts and cold weather can increase the demand for electric power.

"This step should give the public confidence in the energy supply," said the electricity grid operator, reported by Al Jazeera.

The operator did not confirm whether a coal-fired power plant is needed or not. But, the energy source is ready to use at any time.
